Poor Vermont. A bunch of independent movie makers are making fun of their law enforcement officers. Funny thing is, I actually know someone from Vermont and she told me a bunch of horror stories about the local police there well before I ever saw Super Troopers. Plus, for clarification purposes, this is not a movie about gay soldiers brought to you by the makers of South Park, though that too would probably be funny. Mr. Jay Chandrasekhar is the main man behind this film. Not only did he write (along with his fellow troopers as the group Broken Lizard) and direct the film, but he is also one of the main state trooper characters, Thorny. Joining Thorny at the station are Mac (Steve Lemme), Foster (Paul Soter), the rookie Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske), moron fat guy Farva (Kevin Heffernan), and the elder statesman in Captain John O’Hagan (Brian Cox, also in Rushmore). This group of cops simply try to have fun while doing their job, which is done mainly at the expense of good police work and while messing with the public. Unfortunately, their lack of production in the form of arrests, tickets, and other police related goals is very poor, which might get the station shut down in favor of more funding for the local Sudsburry Police. So now it’s time for the gang to shape up or ship out. The problem is, they can’t really shape up that well, plus the local cops want the additional funding. Then a murder lands in the lap of the state troopers, but they turn it over to the local cops instead, so another screw up. It seems the only thing they can do right is find drugs (though this is more of an accident than good police work). Anything more would give away too much of the plot, however the plot isn’t that important in the film. Finally, I will also say that Foster is in love with a local cop named Ursula (Marisa Coughlan, Freddy Got Fingered), though she isn’t too impressed with him at first. Others worth mentioning are Daniel von Bargen as Chief Grady (The Majestic), Lynda Carter, John Bedford Lloyd, Jim Gaffigan (Three Kings), Jimmy Noonan, and Michael Weaver. The most important thing about this movie is that it actually is hilarious. Obviously not everyone is going to get all the jokes, but anyone with a healthy sense of humor will laugh his or her ass off (though the laughs drop off a bit in the middle before regaining momentum for the second half). Granted the story is lame and not very original, but this is a stupid comedy that delivers the advertised laughs and then some. With all that said, I give Super Troopers nine couches with one removed for the slow middle. Later.
