The Review:

Why couldn’t writer/director Robert Rodriguez listen to his own message? Throughout Spy Kids 2 characters kept saying that a spy is only as good as his or her gadgets, but then the film would show the truth that it takes brainpower to make a good spy. In movies, there is a similar message to be learned, where instead of gadgets we insert special effects, and instead of brainpower we insert interesting storylines that require the audience to think. Spy Kids 2 took the path of more special effects is better, which does seem to work with children. By the way, I hate kid’s movies.

I really shouldn’t mention what the plot is for the film, because, frankly, the filmmakers use special effects non-stop to move the film along, so that the movie becomes a rather long video game with a bunch of familiar faces. Briefly, here is the plot: Someone is trying to take over the world, Carmen (Alexa Vega) and Juni (Daryl Sabara) Cortez are official Spy Kids who try to save the world while working for the OSS. Only this time the pair must contend with a rival parent’s kids in their efforts to save the world. That parent being Donnagon Giggles (Mike Judge), the new head of the OSS. His two kids are Gary (Matt O’Leary) and Gerti (Emily Osment) Giggles, and Carmen has a thing for the bad boy Gary. On the other side of the love story portion of the film is Juni’s love for the President’s daughter Alexandra (Taylor Momsen). Plus this time around the parents Gregorio (Antonio Banderas, Original Sin) and Ingrid (Carla Gugino, The One) try to save their kids, unlike in the original Spy Kids. Eventually they all end up on this island inhabited by strange animals created by mad scientist Dr. Romero (Steve Buscemi, Mr. Deeds), which everyone must avoid in the final showdown. Enough said about that.

Also in the film are Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Ricardo Montalban, Holland Taylor, Bill Paxton, Tony Shalhoub (MIB 2), and Alan Cumming to name a few.

Spy Kids 2 was not only worse than the first installment, but it is also a movie that you should be able to get a refund from the studio if you paid to get in. It is not funny in any way whatsoever. I really wanted to just get up and leave, but instead I stayed so that hopefully no one else will have too. I can only give it one couch, and that is a stretch.

Bye bye.
