How about the Roller Derby in a skateboard park with motorcycles and a big steel ball to play with, well that pretty sums up Rollerball staring LL Cool J as Marcus Ridley the kewl Red Dragon on a motorcycle. Give it the speed and flare of The Fast and the Furious and we got ourselves another dangerous street trend for teenagers. Well it is doubtful that a game like Rollerball could be played in the US, so this hot new sport is taking off in Russia, China and a few of the Stan’s you know. All those silly little safety regulations and stuff that make a fun game boring is what these particular countries can look the other way on. So we have the game, and we have the location, so what else is left? I guess the pesky little detail about a storyline or something to that effect. The movie begins fast with Chris Klein (Oz of American Pie and American Pie II) being paid peanuts to risk his life on a combination scooter/skateboard/go-cart flying through the hills of San Francisco. Klein is Jonathan Cross, the all-American boy next door wannabe pro hockey player who gets a rude awakening in this latest stunt and is rescued by his buddy LL Cool J in his kewl car. Klein is pretty much convinced to leave the good ol USA to earn big bucks doing what he does best, dangerous stunts on wheels. The rest of the film is all about this ridiculous game where the rules change faster than street lights. Their Rollerball team, the Red Dragons, are owned by Alexi Petrovich (Jean Reno of Ronin). He looked more like John Astin of the Adams Family TV series than this evil Russian tyrant, but since he was a monster, his only goal was more money and more cable advertising, and obtaining it at whatever the means. Which means if ratings go up with violence then real blood shall be shed and the more the better. Adding some color to this John McTiernan directed film is none other than Pink herself dressed in some dominatrix number. Then I guess Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (X-Men) doesn’t really have to act in movies because they just squeeze her into some painted on leather outfit and have her kick up her legs a few times. Well I guess he had to speak or use her finger as Aurora, the other kewl motorcycle rider of the Red Dragons. Also appearing in the movie is Naveen Andrews, Guy Ale, Sahwan Crahan and Chris Fehn. If you saw the trailer, then you are getting just what you saw, a silly fast game and a lame story. So I would say for mindless entertainment and a few hours killed, Rollerball is worth a six on the About-Movies.com scale. Later
