The Review:

Star Wars (the first time around). Indiana Jones. Back to the Future. Tremors. All of these films are part of a trilogy, and now you can add Ice Cube’s epic ghetto flicks about Fridays in the hood to the list. First there was just plain Friday, which was funny. Then came Next Friday, which I didn’t see. And now here comes Friday After Next, which hopefully is the last Friday.

Just as in the previous installments, Ice Cube (Barbershop) is back as Craig who is hanging out in the hood with his cousin Day-Day (Mike Epps, All About the Benjamins) talkin’ ‘bout weed, money, and hos. This time around it is Christmas Eve and they just got burglarized by Santa Claus, who also managed to unwittingly take the guy’s rent money. With apartment manager Mrs. Pearly (Bebe Drake, Anywhere But Here) all over them for the money (and threatening to sick her prison hardened and now guy son Damon on them), the two remember that they start a new job as security officers that morning. Unfortunately for them, they run into Damon (Terry Crews, Serving Sara) on their way out, who lets them know exactly what he plans to do to them that night if they don’t pay up. Eventually, they get to the strip mall where they will be working and where Craig’s dad (John Witherspoon, Dr. Dolittle 2) and Day-Day’s dad (Don Curry) own a BBQ restaurant. Once at the mall, Moly (Maz Jobrani, Dragonfly) the donut guy and mall operator tells Craig and Day-Day what their job is, and they get to work. Day-Day takes the job too seriously and thinks he’s some kind of super security guard out to protect the world, which makes him a bit overzealous. Meanwhile Craig is scamming to get with the beautiful shop girl Donna (K.D. Aubert, The Scorpion King), but she has a boyfriend in Money Mike (Katt Williams), a skinny, short pimp who owns the store Pimps & Hos. So the rest of the story is the misadventures of Craig and Day-Day in the hood as they try to get the money for rent, get the girls, and try and catch the bad Santa (Rickey Smiley) who later robs them at gunpoint in an alley.

Some others in this Marcus Raboy directed film are Anna Maria Horsford, Clifton Powell, Reggie Gaskins, Joel McKinnon, and Brian Stepanek. Ice Cube and D.J. Pooh get credit for writing the movie.

The original Friday was great, but since then, like most comedic sequels, it has gone downhill. There are a couple good laughs, and quite a few chuckles, but not enough to save the film from a boring story that lacks nudity (OK it still could have been good without nudity, I’m just fantasizing out loud). As to the rating, Friday After Next gets just four couches out of ten.

Bye.
