Ahh, sex. Oh what a feeling! Could you guys go over a month without getting some or at least spanking your bad monkey? I did once, and that actually lasted about 12 years, but then I reached puberty and I don’t think I’ve lasted more than a week since. But 40 Days and 40 Nights is more than just about abstinence, it is about finding humor in romance and abstinence. So yes, 40 Days and 40 Nights is yet another romantic comedy. The film begins with Matt (Josh Hartnett from Black Hawk Down, O) in love with the beautiful Nicole. He can’t seem to get enough of her, but the feeling begins to not be mutual. Eventually Nicole (Vinessa Shaw, Corky Romano) dumps Matt, sending him into a binge of meaningless, loveless sex with beautiful women (lucky guy). However, this sex binge isn’t helping him get over Nicole, plus it seems to be messing with his mind (he starts seeing black holes in his ceiling). So Matt starts going to chat with a priest in training who just happens to be his brother John (Adam Trese). These sessions don’t help much, but he is reminded of Lent, and so he sets off to refrain from any sexual contact for 40 days and nights (no intercourse, no oral sex, no masturbation, not even sexual touching) so that he can finally get over Nicole and get on with his life. This is where things start to get really funny as people around him begin to learn of Matt’s pledge. So, his friends (actually they are just co-workers) at a dot com place that apparently has not seen hard times, set up a web site to take bets on when Matt will fail in his attempt. Enter temptation stage right. First, the temptation comes in the form of a girl he meets at the Laundromat, Erica (Shannyn Sossamon, A Knight’s Tale). The first time they meet she does all the talking, since he is preoccupied with his vow. But after that, the two hit it off and start spending a lot of time together, but no kissing or sex. Meanwhile back at the office, the stakes are rising in the betting pool so some of the women start trying to get Matt to give in (most normal men would have given in since these women were very, very hot) and sleep with them, so they can win the bet. Then the proverbially shit hits the fan when Erica discovers the web site about the bet before Matt mentions his vow to her (she works for an internet company too). These episodes, the adventures of Matt’s boss (Griffin Dunne), and the musings of the Bagel Guy (Michael C. Maronna) create most of the laughs, though some credit goes to Matt’s roommate Ryan (Paulo Costanzo). Will we laugh more, will Matt make it to the end, and will he get his girl? This here particular film is directed by Michael Lehmann, who directed the rather funny, The Truth About Cats & Dogs, which starred the funny Janeane Garofalo. No real point in mentioning this, but it might come in handy if you are playing the six degrees of Kevin Bacon (Garofalo was in The Cable Guy with Matthew Broderick who was in She's Having a Baby with Bacon). Moving on, others in the cast are Monet Mazur (very funny and sexy scene involving a copier), Keegan Connor Tracy, Emmanuelle Vaugier, Terry Chen, Adam Del Rio, Kai Lennox, Michelle Harrison, Glenn Fitzgerald, Dylan Neal as Nicole’s new fiancé, and many more. At this point I will mention that there is some nice nudity in this picture. That said, now for the downfalls. Erica and Matt fall for each other way too fast. Other than beauty (and not really that much there) there is no reason for Matt to love the bitchy Nicole. Other than that, I enjoyed the film and I laughed quite a bit. Did I mention the naked breasts? Anyway, 40 Days & 40 Nights shall receive seven couches out of ten from About-Movies.com.Bye, bye.
