The Mexican was really two short films, one starring Brad Pitt (Fight Club) as Jerry and the other starring Julia Roberts as Samantha. Each short film has its own plot and agenda and neither the two will meet. Well okay they do, briefly in the end for about 15 minutes and oh the 10 seconds in the beginning when the two separate. In the grand scheme of things how could this work? How exactly could a romantic comedy work it the two starring roles are not even in the same plot? Well the way Sam and Jerry relate to one another, all I can say is thank gawd they are only together for 15 minutes. We have all seen the trailers of Roberts (Erin Brockovich) and Pitt together. That pretty much was the film, what we see of those trailers is what we get in interaction of Roberts and Pitt. Well with the brief exception of a couple more brief and I mean brief scenes and that is all folks, each star has their own little movie. Clever idea or very risky but director Gore Verbinski (Mouse Hunt) seemed to make it work. I went into The Mexican thinking this will be awful, but at least it has Julia Roberts and a slight possibility I would see Pitts bare ass. I was surprised. It really would have been awful any other way. I would not have been able to take the two of them screaming and arguing for two hours. Oh my gawd. Jerry has one last job to pay off a mobster he owed. The job is to go into Mexico and pick up a revolver called "The Mexican" and return it to his boss as he is getting out of prison. Roberts agenda is to move to Las Vegas and work as a waitress, she does this with or without Jerry, well obviously it is without Jerry. She claims her life has been on hold for the last five years while Jerry is working off his debt to this mobster because he did something stupid. Okay this was like the first five minutes of the film and they separate. Pitts movie is his mishaps and adventures in Mexico and Roberts movie his her encounters in Las Vegas. Along the way we get several versions of this little folktale about the origins of The Mexican. There is humor poking fun of Mexicans, Americans in Mexico and every other group they can offend while sticking with the plot. The Mexican was entertaining but not work $8.00. I recommend seeing the bargain matinee show or wait for video. I did not get to see Pitt's ass, so I was a bit disappointed there. I give The Mexican a seven in the About-Movies rating. Later.
