Okay girls, what is better than a Freddie Prinze Jr. movie, a Freddie Prinze Jr. movie with him wearing a neon orange thong and nothing else. Yeah baby Summer Catch bears all! And let me tell you what a nice behind it is. You lucky girl Sarah Michelle AKA Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I bet you get to see him in your thong all the time. Well this time it was Brittany Murphy’s neon orange thong. You remember her from Clueless and the chicken eating freak from Girl, Interrupted. In Summer Catch she is Cape Cod’s Oasis bar slut with a special way of pouring beer, between her legs. Yeah that’s special. But don’t worry Prinze’s character Ryan Dunne only goes for it once and that is enough. The film is a romantic comedy, not science fiction. We all know Prinze is great to look at, so who needs a real plot or even original dialogue. So we can guess this movie is your typical poor boy trying to make good, hooks up with rich girl he does manual labor for. Nothing special about this story and certainly nothing original, even the concept of playing baseball for an a summer team. But we get to see Prinze (Head Over Heels) in a THONG! Okay the movie starts out with Prinze describing what people think of when they picture Cape Cod, not what I picture, but I didn’t write this film, Kevin Falls did. So basically you have the local blue collar workers, the summer people that seem to all live on one rich street and the only thing in town to do is drink at the Oasis and watch college boys play baseball for the Chattam A’s. Prinze is the local boy that was supposed to have made it big in baseball but he has this anger issue. And because his brother and father blew their chance at a career in baseball he is going to be a loser just like them. Every time he gets into a jam on the mound he folds. This summer he meets Tenley (Jessica Biel, Ulee's Gold) the rich girl he mows the lawn for, well he mows it for her blue blood father Rand Parrish (Bruce Davison, Crazy/Beautiful) and she helps him find his way. Also in this picture is Matthew Lillard (She's All That) as Billy Bru Brubaker the catcher. He does a wonderful job as the sidekick friend. Not only does he hook up with a summer girl, he gets to wear a blue thong too. We get to see it from the front though. Oh my gawd. Then that Fez guy from that 70’s show Wilmer Valderrama is Mickey Domo Dominguez. His housemother does practically the whole team and she is supposed to do things with grapes and cucumbers, well I just don’t want to think about that. Brian Dennehy is Coach John Schiffner and Fred Ward is Prinze’s dad Sean Dunne. He owns the lawn mowing business. The bartender at the Oasis is Prinze’s brother Mike Dunne (Jason Gedrick). Directing Summer Catch is, Michael Tollin. If you are looking for a sappy love story and few laughs and a reminder of what real friendship is all about, then you will enjoy Summer Catch. If you want something a little more, well go shopping instead. I give this summer’s baseball movie a seven on the About-Movies.com scale. Hey batter batter.
