The Review:

I just love dance movies and what's even better are the dance movies that actually have a plausible story to go along with it. Save the Last Dance, directed by Thomas Carter (also directed Swing Kids), played on all your emotions and provided you with clever little dance routines. The film kept moving and I don't recall any slow moments are times when I felt it could have gone another direction. Save the Last Dance was well written and well performed. The movie begins with a small Midwestern town girl off to audition at Julliard. She begs her mother to be there even if she has to leave her job to do so. Her mother promises. At the audition Sara (Julia Stiles, State and Main) does poorly and her mother is a no-show. As it turns out her mother was in an auto crash while rushing to get there. Sara now has to live with her musician father in Chicago's south side. Sara is befriended by Chenille (Kerry Washington, Our Song) and her smart-ass mouth brings her acceptance by most of Chenille's crowd. Later at a dance club Sara discovers there is more to dancing than what she picked up in dance class. Chenille's brother Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas, Dracula 2000) offers to teach her some moves. More than a friendship develops and they both learn how hard you have to work at what is most important to you. This is a very emotional movie and takes a lot out of you. The tension is relived with dance routines and scenes on the "el". You want to see Sara and Derek succeed and beat the odds. I give Save the Last Dance an eight out of 10 in the rating but boy would I have like to see the Ass of Thomas, that would have made the movie for me.
