What
do you get when you combine snow boarding, heavy drinking, and joints? That’s
right boys and girls, you get a script for a movie, and not a particularly good
movie. To be perfectly honest, I don’t actually know if this was the writing
process for Jon Zack, but judging by the content of the movie, I feel pretty
confident that it was. Out
Cold is set in the far north of Alaska where the men are tough and there ain’t
no women (my English teachers can’t be happy with those last few words). The
town is just a small ski resort on Bull Mountain that isn’t much of a resort.
There is a small group of friends who live and work on the mountain. They like
it since they can drink and smoke pot all they want, though the one downside is
that there are very few women around. But times are a changing and the ski
business is going corporate. So, Ted Muntz (Willie Garson, There’s
Something About Mary) the ski resort owner is looking to sell out and cash
in. The local gang of friends that is led by Rick (Jason London) are a bit leery
of the change in ownership, but hope that it will mean more chicks in town. Then
along comes John Majors (Lee Majors from The Fall Guy) of Major’s Resorts with
his fancy Hummer and Yuppie ways. John brings along his two daughters Inga
(Victoria Silvstedt) and Anna (Caroline Dhavernas) and a bunch of changes to
turn Bull Mountain into Snownook, an Aspen like resort destination. This totally
changes the town to the point where most of the gang can’t stand hanging
around anymore (plus most of them are fired). So as that 80s song says, should I
stay or should I go becomes the question. Then we have to wait to see what other
mishaps can Luke (Zach Galifianakis from Corky
Romano) have since he already has been blown by a bear and had his penis
stuck in the jets of a hot tub. Plus will the gang stay together, and who will
Rick end up with, Anna or local girl Jenny (A.J. Cook)? So
yes there is a plot to Out Cold, but it is weak and tired. There are a ton of
laughs, but they are all lowbrow humor, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The acting is what is to be expected with a film of this caliber, and how can
you go wrong with a character named Pigpen (Derek Hamilton from Disturbing
Behavior)? The rest of the cast in this Brendan and Emmett Malloy directed
film are Flex Alexander (the token black guy), David Denman from The
Replacements, Adam Harrington (Valentine),
Brett Kelly, and Scott Heindl. The
only thing saving Out Cold from getting about a one is that it was very funny
and damn there are some hot chicks. So taking those things into consideration, I
give Out Cold four couches out of ten for the About-Movies.com rating.
