The Review:

Do you like occasionally good special effects, a tired plot, and so-so acting? Then The Mummy Returns is the film for you!

Yes Brendan Fraser (Monkey Bone) is back as archeologist Rick O’Connell and yes this film is loaded with adventure and special effects just like the first one, The Mummy. In fact I would say too many effects, and at sometimes bad looking effects.

O’Connell and his wife Evelyn (Rachel Weisz, Enemy at the Gates) and son Alex (Freddie Boath) are in Egypt in the Thirties looking for artifacts. Then the shit hits the fan as we learn of the plans of the bad guys to bring back the evil Scorpion King (the WWF’s The Rock, or Dwayne Johnson) and bring back the mummy Imhotep. The family goes back to London with the Scorpion King’s bracelet where they are followed by the strange cult that wants to take over the world with the Scorpion King’s evil, supernatural army. The boy gets kidnapped by the cult, which is led by the London Museum curator (Alun Armstrong, Proof of Life) and his partner Meela (Patricia Velazquez). So the parents and brother/brother-in-law Jonathan (John Hannah, The Hurricane) head back to Egypt to recover their son and try and stop the cult. This is when the cult brings back to life Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) so that he can take on the Scorpion King in a battle for the King’s army. During the chase we learn that Meela and Evelyn are re-incarnated rivals from ancient Egypt (I did like the two attractive women wearing little clothing doing battle), with Evelyn being Princess Nefertiri and Meela her guard Anck-Su-Namun. Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr) also makes an appearance in an effort to assist the good guys. That’s pretty much the plot, rescue the kid, defeat the bad guys and throw in a lot of special effects to keep people entertained.

Stephen Sommers wrote and directed The Mummy Returns, which is more work than he did on the first film in which he only directed. Others in the cast not mentioned above are Donna Air, Shuan Parkes, Joe Dixon, Bruce Byron, and Tom Fisher.

Not that good would be the best way to describe my thoughts on this film. Plenty of special effects, but they were often not done that well (for instance The Rock’s face on the Scorpion body looked completely fake). Obviously the plot isn’t that original, and there wasn’t much depth to it. The one bright spot was the comedy provided by the boy Alex, and by Evelyn’s brother Jonathan. To wrap this up (a required mummy pun), I give The Mummy Returns three couches for the About-Movies.com rating. Farewell.
