Alright, everyone whip out your monkeys and start spanking them cause they've been bad, very, very bad. OK maybe your monkey hasn't been bad but the movie Monkey Bone sure was bad (if not horrible). This Henry Selick directed film stars Brendan Fraser (Bedazzled) as cartoonist Stu Miley who is about to make it big with his cartoon creation Monkey Bone. The cartoon is supposed to be a sick combination of South Park and Beavis & Butthead, morphed together into Curious George. Now I feel I have a rather sick and twisted mind of my own (and many of my friends would agree), so I tend to like humor based on bodily functions and references to sexual matters. However the humor I like also has some wit to it, which Monkey Bone lacks (that and humor in general). As to the story, Stu is in love and about to propose to his honey Julie (Bridget Fonda, Lake Placid) when he has a freak accident with a blow up toy (not that kind). This sends him into a coma, which his sister Kimmy (Megan Mullally) wants to end quickly by pulling the plug (this role could not have been too challenging since it is the same one she plays on Will & Grace as Karen). But Stu's gal Julie holds out for 3 months, and so they wait. Meanwhile in Stu's mind, Stu is trying to get out of Downtown and back to his life. Downtown is where all people hang out while they are in comas. This place is inhabited by some permanent residents, mainly freaks like Hypnos (Giancarlo Esposito), Kitty (Rose McGowan), and a rat prison guard (Arturo Gil). Occasionally Downtown entertains visitors from death's gates like Death (Whoopi Goldberg, Girl, Interruppted) and the Grim Reaper. But there is a twist in the plot when Monkey Bone escapes into Stu's body instead of Stu. So now Stu has to try and get rid of Monkey Bone and re-claim his life. This film is based on Kaja Blackley's novel by the title of Dark Town, and the screenplay is by Sam Hamm (I am!?). Chris Kattan, Dave Foley, from O Brother, Where Art Thou? is John Turturro (as Monkey Bone), and Lisa Zane appear in the film as well. This film pretty much sucked as you could probably tell from the ominous first paragraph. The plot was stupid, the jokes were not funny, and the acting blew chunks. Now the special effects weren't bad, but that hardly makes a movie (though some producers in Hollywood would disagree). Well for the About-Movies.com rating I can only give Monkey Bone one couch (and that might be more than it deserves) out of ten. Mark my words, this film will not win any awards (except maybe worst picture of the year). Goodbye. Last updated: Saturday, October 28, 2006 05:37:38 PM |
