The Review:

Do you like those animated films meant for kids that threw in lots of jokes for the adults? You know, movies like Shrek, A Bug’s Life, and Toy Story 2. Well I do too, but Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius is not one of those kinds of films. It is indeed animated and meant for kids, but adults won’t have anything entertaining to watch.

As the previews suggest, Jimmy Neutron (Debi Derryberry from Toy Story) is a bright little tike that likes to make inventions and play with rockets. His best friend is Carl Wheezer (Rob Paulsen), a chunky, asthmatic kid who likes Jimmy for who he is. At the start of the film we see Jimmy and Carl heading into space to launch a toaster satellite into orbit so Jimmy can talk to the aliens that had tried contacting Earth. Well this works and soon the aliens pay a visit. But before that Jimmy is shown as an outcast for his brainy ways by the cool kids Cindy (Carolyn Lawrence, Little Man Tate) and Nick (Candi Milo). In addition, he gets in trouble at home for making a mess with his experiments (namely destroying the chimney). Due to these parental issues he wishes that his parents would disappear (sounds like Home Alone to me), and they do when the aliens come to take them away to use as food. See, the aliens get Jimmy’s satellite and decided that the parents would be good sacrifices to their giant chicken like god/beast (by the way these aliens are green goo encased in suits that look like egg shells, much like the aliens from The Simpsons). So now all the kids have to figure out what happened to their parents, and then how to get them back, but not before they go on a binge of doing things their parents told them not to do. Since Jimmy is the smart one, he figures out what happened, and devises a plan to get the parents back. The other kids then help to build a fleet of spaceships out of amusement park rides before heading off into space to rescue the parents. Blah blah blah. Who cares?

This poor attempt at a kid’s film is directed by John Davis, who along with Steve Oedekerk wrote the thing. Besides those already mentioned, other crewmembers are Megan Cavanagh, Mark DeCarlo, Martin Short, and Patrick Stewart (X-Men).

So if you are six years old or have had brain damage then you might enjoy this film, otherwise you will be like me and be bored most of the film. For that reason I give the film two whole couches for the About-Movies.com rating. Goodbye.
