How High? How about how low can you go? I know that was a bit cheesy, but How High seeks to exploit the lowest common denominator in comedy, gross-out humor. Yes, many laughs do come from the weed, but most of the laughs come from the actors grossing out the audience. Now I’m not saying some of it isn’t funny, it’s just I’ve been there, done that this year with Scary Movie 2 and Not Another Teen Movie. As
to the movie, two pot smokers from Philly get some help from a dead friend to
ace their college entrance exams (they smoked a joint that contained weed in it
that was grown using the dead guy’s ashes as fertilizer). So off to Harvard
they go where the Chancellor (Fred Willard from The
Wedding Planner) is looking to add some diversity to the mostly white
student body. At Harvard they face their nemesis in Dean Cain (Obba Babatundé),
who is also black, but also an uptight academic type who can’t believe these
two pot heads are not cheating (and they are by using their dead friend). Other
pursuits of Silas (Method Man, Cop
Land) include going after the hot Lauren (Lark Voorhies)
and trying to perfect his herbal into a truth serum. Meanwhile Jamal (Redman)
joins the crew team to harass the captain of the team, Bart (Chris Elwood). So
the two guys are busy pursuing extra curricular activities while the dean tries
to get them expelled. Some of these incidents and adventures are funny, but not
enough to make a decent film. Other
cast folk in this Jesse Dylan directed film are Trieu Tran, Justin Urich, Al
Shearer, Essence Atkins, Patrice Fisher, Hector Elizondo, and Anna Maria
Horsford.
