The Review:

When I think of Sigourney Weaver I immediately think Aliens, not comedy. I also think old, not sexy. Now when I think of Jennifer Love Hewitt I do think sexy, but although she has done a lot of comedies (Can't Hardly Wait, Trojan War), I don't think she's that great of a comedic actress. In fact the only actor/actress in Heartbreakers that I would consider a funny actor is Jason Lee.

That said, Heartbreakers turns out to be a rather humorous tale of boy meets girl, girl cons boy out of money and repeat. Weaver (The Ice Storm) plays Max, who is Page's (Love-Hewitt) mother. Max is getting married to Dean (Ray Liotta from Hannibal), but plans on ending it quickly in order to get a nice cash settlement. So immediately after the wedding Dean gets set up to try and screw Page, whom Dean does not know is Max's daughter. It works, Max gets the money and a Mercedes while Dean gets heartbroken. After this con Page wants to part ways and go it on her own, but mommy does want that so she schemes up a plan to keep her for one more big score. After a little help from an old friend (Anne Bancroft, Keeping the Faith), it's off to Miami Beach to go gold digging. While there they find a nice prospect in cigarette billionaire William Tensy (Gene Hackman, The Mexican) who seems to cough more than talk. Max goes off executing her part of the plan, while Page seems more interested in a local bar owner by the name of Jack (Jason Lee of Dogma & Almost Famous). Despite a rough start to the relationship, Page and Jack fall for each other, but Page knows it can't be. Then good old Dean shows up looking to win Max back, but he soon discovers the whole truth and wants his money back. So now things get a bit complicated, and a little funnier (not that the rest of the film isn't already funny). Heartbreakers is directed by David Mirkin, written by Robert Dunn, and the screenplay credit goes to a Mr. Paul Guay (bet he got teased a lot growing up). The rest of the cast includes but is not limited to, Michael Hitchcock, Ricky Jay, Stacey Travis, Nora Dunn, and Jeffrey Jones.

Overall, Heartbreakers is a funny movie with good performances coming from Jason Lee, Gene Hackman, and Ray Liotta. Weaver and Hewitt are adequate, but the others were able to have more fun with their respective roles. I would have really liked it if the film would have had some good nude scenes involving Jennifer Love Hewitt, but instead I had to settle for bathing suit shots instead. As to the rating for Heartbreakers, I decree eight couches for the About-Movies.com review. After while crocodile.
