The Review:

Do you like animals that talk? Do you like animals with funny medical problems? Well then the doctor is back in session in Dr. Dolittle 2. Good old Eddie Murphy (Shrek) reprises his role as the title character. The premise is pretty much the same as the first movie, but the story changes a little bit.

This time the good doctor needs to save a forest where lots of animals live while trying to keep the peace at home, which the main issue is with his 16 year-old daughter Charisse (Raven-Symone). In order to save the forest, the doc has to re-train Archie (Steve Zahn, Saving Silverman) the circus bear to be a wild bear. After this is done the doc then needs Archie to mate with the only other bear in his species, Ava (Lisa Kudrow). This sounds simple enough but of course there are problems. On the home front, this talking with animals bugs the hell out of Charisse because she wants to live a normal teenage life. In between dealing with these serious issues (hah, I said serious issues in a review of this film), the animals do lots of funny and occasionally disgusting things.

Steve Carr directs all the actors, actresses, and animals. Lerry Levin wrote the screenplay, which is based on the stories of Hugh Lofting. Others in the cast are Kristen Wilson (Dungeons & Dragons), Jeffrey Jones, Kevin Pollack, Lil’ Zane, Kyla Pratt, and a bunch of others for the animal voices.

Straight to the point, Dr. Dolittle 2 has some funny moments, but not nearly enough to save the film. A comedy with a cheesy and predictable plot such as this had better be non-stop laughs, and this film just doesn’t deliver that. So for the rating, Dr. Dolittle 2 gets four couches, which is one more than Dr. Dolittle received. Later.
