The Review:

Chick flick, I should say so. Will men enjoy it? I should say so. The humor was outstanding and entertaining throughout the picture. Well, Bridget Jones's Diary might have been directed by a female (Sharon Maguire) but the writing credits go to a couple of men, Richard Curtis and Andrew Davies (for the screenplay, but the book is by Helen Fielding. So men can also relate to Bridget Jones and the women can relate to Bridget and the two leading men.

The plot is basically the year in the life of a woman- Bridget (Renee Zellweger from Me, Myself & Irene) beginning with what else, New Years. Her resolution is to quit smoking, stop drinking so much, lose some weight, and quit falling for men with bad qualities, smokers, heavy drinkers, lechers, and the commitment phobic. As is the way with unattainable or unreasonable resolutions these do not last. At her mothers annual turkey curry New Year's day party where Pam Jones (Gemma Jones, Sense and Sensibility) attempts to fix her daughter up with an eligible man. A barrister Mark Darcy (Colin Firth, Shakespeare in Love), recently divorced. He is pompous, arrogant, rude and hurtful. Other women would have fled the room in tears but Bridget handles herself in her typical humorous fashion even though we feel her pain. Prompting her to make a more resolute attempt at meeting her goals. Bridget begins a diary. Now her boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant, Mickey Blue Eyes) is flirting with this newly confident woman, not really confident, just witty. He embodies all the traits she is to stay away from though, but hey the sex is fabulous and you know how many calories you can burn in great sex. All the while that nasty ol Darcy keeps turning up. The catch with that is Cleaver and Darcy have a past. Cleaver was the best man at Darcy's wedding and Cleaver told Bridget that Darcy later ran off with his finance and broke his heart. The year moves fast as Bridget falls in love and is cheated on by Cleaver. Now heartbroken she finds new work in television with her usual bumbling hilarious outcomes. Darcy is much more appealing and Cleaver returns (he was dumped by the younger, thinner one). What does Bridget do? Well you can be rest assured it will be awkward, funny and endearing. Who can't relate to many of her most embarrassing issues? Well okay I can honestly say I have never had my ass exposed on television but many of her other situations resemble life in some sort of cosmic way. Only we can laugh at her moments, ours I bet we want to cry or slit our wrists. The only bare ass I saw was Bridget's, not what I was looking for, but I don't think I want to see Hugh Grant's either- skinny, pale English dudes just are not what fantasies are made of. I give Bridget Jones's Diary a nine in the About-Movies rating because I laughed through the entire film and isn't that what comedy is all about.
