The Review:

Since this is a sequel, we must compare it to the original. And since the first American Pie movie made lots of money, they had to make a second (my prediction is that there will be a third installment as well).

As the trailers said, the gang is all back home after a year at various colleges, and they are looking to make it a memorable summer. So Jim (Jason Biggs from Saving Silverman), Oz (Chris Klein, Election), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas, Freddy Got Fingered), and even Stifler (Seann William Scott, Evolution) head to the lake for a summer of sun and fun. At the lake they rent a nice beach house to stay at, but to afford it they take summer jobs as a house painting crew, which is where they meet the “lesbians,” which is an awesome, knee slapping scene. Anyway, Jim continues to have sexual misadventures that are just as funny as ever, including all the problems that you learn about from the trailers, plus a few others. Stifler is still an asshole, Finch still wants Stifler’s mom, and Kevin is still stuck on high school. The plot for American Pie 2 is pretty much self-discovery for the gang, and trying to get hook-ups for the summer. Of course flute girl (Alyson Hannigan), Jim’s dad (Eugene Levy, The Ladies Man), Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth, Tomcats), the Shermannator (Chris Owen), and Stifler’s mom are all involved, plus they add Stifler’s little bro.

The rest of the cast includes Natasha Lyonne, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, Lisa Arturo, Denise Faye, and Molly Cheek. James B. Rogers directs American Pie 2, he was only an assistant director for the first film, while the screenplay was written by David Steinberg.

American Pie 2 is a hilarious film with rising star Jason Biggs leading the way. However, it is just not as good as the first. I think the screenwriter was trying to show more depth to the characters, which added a few too many dull spots where the characters were trying to make sense of their adolescence. That said, I still give the sequel eight couches and an inflatable doll (for Jim to practice with). Later.
