Have you ever just watched what a spider does? The spider just goes along with its business everyday, constructing this intricate web design. All for what, to lay in wait for some unsuspecting victim to fall prey to the spiders plan. Evil? Calculating? The spider is, what it is. The web is right there for all to identify and evaluate. Along Came a Spider, directed by Lee Tamahori, is the prequel to Kiss the Girls only because Morgan Freeman (Nurse Betty) has reprised his role of Doctor Alex Cross. We last left Dr. Cross in Kiss the Girls entering into his retirement, so of course this movie has to go back in time, even though Freeman is still going forward in age. This film begins with Dr. Cross in the midst of catching a truly despicable person. He is just about to nab his suspect then something goes terribly wrong. . . Jump eight months ahead and an "emotionally damaged" Cross is a homebody keeping busy with hobbies. I don't think all this hooey about Cross being damaged is essential to the movie, but hey it is not my film. Cross is now brought back into play by a psycho who has spent years designing his intricate web and laying in wait to catch his prey. The prey is a senators daughter, Megan (Mika Boorem, The Patriot) snatched from her private school right under the nose of head secret service agent Jezzie Flannigan (Monica Potter, Head Over Heels). Jezzie convinces Cross to let her be his new partner (he is damaged because he lost his partner to that sociopath in the beginning of the film) because she feels so guilty about letting the senator down and Megan being kidnapped and he consents. While Cross is home getting his head back in the game, Gary Soneji (Michael Wincott, Alien: Resurrection) phones Cross with information that basically invites him into the kidnapping case and his web. Along Came a Spider is a nicely written and very cleverly executed suspense thriller. Writing credit go to James Patterson and the screenplay, by Marc Moss. We the audience were clueless until very late into the film and then we get a surprise ending for any arachnid lover. What turns up in this web I don't believe the spider was expecting. Pay close attention to only the facts. Don't try too hard to fit a piece into the puzzle that is not there. I don't want to give away very much of the plot, why spoil a really good suspense. So I will just give Along Came a Spider a 10 on the about movie rating. I really like when I don't have the plot figured out early on in the movie and a lot of people die (that is always a bonus in any good flick.) It's all aces baby.
