They say everyone gets fifteen minutes of fame. Some people get theirs by accident, others seek out fame. 15 Minutes is a film about a pair of foreigners who soon after arriving to America decide to seek out fame as a vehicle to wealth. 15 Minutes starts off in New York with a Russian and a Czech going through customs, where you can tell they ain't here to be nice guys. We find out rather quickly that Emil Slovak (Karel Roden), the Czech, came to get his share of the profits from a robbery. However his partner from that robbery has since spent all the money and is now working as a plumber, so in a fit of rage Emil kills him and his wife. While Emil is busy killing the Russian films it. Oleg Taktarov plays the Russian character Olig. Unfortunately for the two, there is a witness to the crime and she gets away. First they burn the bodies and the apartment, and then they go after the witness. Daphne is the cute Czech girl who saw the killings, but is afraid to come forward since she is here illegally. Meanwhile, star detective Eddie Flemming (Robert De Niro, Meet the Parents) is out chasing crooks and preparing to propose to his girlfriend Nicolette (Melina Kanakaredes, Dangerous Beauty). Then you have Fire Marshal Bill, make that Jordy (Edward Burns, Saving Private Ryan) out chasing after fires. These two meet up at the scene of the crime because 1) there was a murder and 2) there was an arson. So now Eddie and Jordy are on the case. While those two are bonding, the killers are discovering from the media that murderers can get away with their crimes with a good lawyer and an insanity plea, plus then they can get rich from the movie rights. So they kill some more, but then realize that for the big money they need to kill a big name. Next stop, killing Eddie. And of course Emil kills while Olig records it on video. Then on top of all that, you have the media presence that is personified by sleaze reporter Robert Hawkins (Kelsey Grammer, Toy Story 2). Hawkins has become a good friend off Eddie by helping Eddie with media attention while garnering ratings for himself. John Hertzfeld wrote and directed 15 Minutes. Others in the film include Avery Brooks, Tygh Runyan, John DiResta, Kim Cattrall, and Christine Abrusci. I liked Burns' acting, while the rest put in decent performances. We actually have a decent plot, however there is very little character development (would have been nice to learn more about Jordy, Eddie, Olig, and Emil). There is plenty of action and even a decent body count, but alas no nudity. Anyway, I give 15 Minutes seven couches for the About-Movies.com rating. That's it.
