The Review:

The thing that women want is for you to listen to what they are saying, and what is more is that they also expect for you to know what they are thinking when they tell you things. Now to the actual movie instead of my ramblings. What Women Want starts with a brief history of Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson, The Patriot & Chicken Run) and how his childhood relationships with women have made him the man he is, mainly a womanizer. Now skip ahead to the present where Nick is a key adman in a Chicago firm run by Dan Wanamaker (Alan Alda, Canadian Bacon). Nick wanders in to work, late as usual, expecting this to be the day he is promoted to the position of creative director, when Dan lays a bomb on Nick. Dan tells Nick that the firm needs to be more in touch with its feminine side in order to attract advertising oriented towards women, and that the firm has hired Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt, Cast Away). Darcy's first act is to get everyone to take home a box of products geared toward women aged 16-24 and try to come up with ideas on how tell sell these products. Which Nick does, but first he must meet with his ex-wife Gigi (Lauren Holly, Down Periscope) and daughter Alex (Ashley Johnson, Anywhere But Here) as Gigi remarries. You see Alex will be staying with dad during the honeymoon. But back to the female products that include pantyhose, a wonder bra, hair thickener, leg wax, and more. Nick takes them home, gets drunk, tries out the products, and then has a little accident. The accident is that he falls into the tub with the hair dryer and gets a nice little shock. When he awakens the next morning he now has the ability to hear the thoughts of women. At first this freaks him out, but then after consulting with his marriage counselor Dr. Perkins (Bette Midler) he discovers that it is a blessing in disguise. In a way Nick first uses his "powers" for evil to try and get ride of Darcy, get all the women to want him, and to score with the coffee girl Lola (Marisa Tomei, The Watcher), but in the end he starts to use the gift for good. Of course I haven't mentioned the romance between Nick and Darcy, but that is because of the following questions I had to ask myself regarding their relationship: Is this romance possible? And is this romance probable. My answers were yes, then no. Here are my thoughts on their relationship: First it really isn't developed that well, and two why would you fall for someone you want fired for taking your promotion? So I found that in the end this romance wasn't plausible. Nancy Meyers directs this Cathy Yuspa written film based on the story by Josh Goldsmith. Others staring in What Women Want are Mark Feuerstein, Eric Balfour, Maggie Egan, Valerie Perrine, Delta Burke, and Judy Greer as the quiet (but strangely sexy) Erin. I must say that I enjoyed most of the humor in this film and the various stories within it. My only issue was the one regarding the romance between Hunt and Mel. To wrap this up I give What Women Want eight couches for the About-Movies.com rating. Later.
