The Review:

A movie with Denzel Washington how could it not be a success? And success it is. Remember the Titans, directed by Boaz Yakin is yet another example of how my man Denzel proves there's no role he can't do. Still the hunky beefcake he was in The Hurricane, he is now the new head football coach, Herman Boone for TC Williams. A Virginia high school in 1970, which has just been racially integrated with two other black high schools. The movie only chose to make it one black school. TC Williams has to deal with all the racial issues and shows how football brought them all together. For anyone who has ever lived in a small community it is not hard to see what that sport means to the community and how families come together in support. A winning season doesn't hurt either. Denzel was hired to be the assistant coach, much to the opposition of the Head Coach Bill Yost (Will Patton, Gone in Sixty Seconds). He was a Hall of Fame nominee and close to his players. The school board turns around and makes Boone the new coach and Yost is out. The white players threaten to boycott the season and Yost tells them not to. At the same time Boone comes to Yost and offers his a spot as assistant. Yost decides to take the offer, only to make sure the white boys play. Now they are off to football camp for two weeks. The first the Denzel does is unload the busses and reload them. Offense on one bus, defense on the other, oh yeah, one black player to a seat and one white. These would also be their roommate at camp. This is the type of movie you know the outcome. After all it was based on history. You also know and have seen all the same clichés, it still is a sport movie. Despite all the clichés and the sugar coating of the very real racial intensity that would have taken place, Remember the Titans manages to play on all of your emotions and draw you in. You find yourself really rallying for their school and despising their opponents. Denzel plays his role without flaw. His strength and character is what brought these boys together and eases the tensions. He was also great to look at in his coaching attire. I didn't get to see Denzel's butt and felt a little disappointed. What female wouldn't want to see a naked Denzel? With or without a naked Denzel this film is one to be remembered, especially at Oscar time, since they passed him over for The Hurricane. I give Remember the Titans a nine out of 10 couches.
