The best thing about the Sci-fi / horror movie Pitch Black was Vin Diesel. Ironically he was the only thing good about Boiler Room. The direction of David Twohy and the special effects were also well done. What distracting from this nicely shot picture were some lapses in a few of the concepts brought up and then dropped as if they never occurred. The air is one of them. Initially it was laboring to breathe and then immediately forgotten that it was an issue on the planet. This is distracting when an action seen occurs and they can breathe aerobically. They should have just left that idea on the cutting room floor. While I am at it, whom did they think they were fooling? That little girl never came across as a little boy, so not a shock when that was revealed. Diesel plays a truly evil criminal, Richard Riddick, being transported by the space ship the crashes. As one of the survivors of the space ship that crashes on this virtually empty, dead planet he is asked to help the others in return for his freedom. Along with the low oxygen, this planet has two suns and what appears to be no night. That is of coarse except for about every 15 years, night comes. What luck these passengers have, they crash on a deserted planet, one of them kills for fun, and in dark building, caves and underground lives an evil creature that devourers its victims. Right after they land it's about to be the fifteen year cycle. Ok what I want to know is what does this creature eat during the period of continuous daylight? I know, too much analysis ruins a decent sci-fi picture. A few others in the movie are Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser (Good Will Hunting), Claudia Black, Keith David (There's Something About Mary), Lewis Fitz-Gerald, Rhiana Griffith, and John Moore.
