The Review:

What is it about already knowing the outcome of the movie, going in to it? Titanic you know the ship sinks, The Perfect Storm, you know the ship sinks and they all die. What gets me is they break the first rule of storytelling, there has to be a survivor or journal to tell the story. All the action out at sea, in The Perfect Storm, is completely fictional. Yes I know it is based on a real storm and shipwreck, but come on the entire scenario is made up. The direction of Wolfgang Peterson (Air Force One) is probably whom I should blame for this less than effective film about a very dramatic situation. The role of George Clooney (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) as Captain Billy Tyne was limited pretty much to steering the ship. Why you ask would an actor with much more ability be limited to holding on to the wheel? I guess because he is the Captain of the Andrea Gail and that's what Captains do, steer ships, read charts and find the fish. Then we have Mark Wahlberg (Three Kings), as Bobby Shatford, the rookie on the ship. We hear him say, in the trailer and in a scene, talk about his love for fishing and his girl. When exactly did he develop this love of fishing? On his first trip, they didn't catch anything, didn't get paid what they expected and oh yeah had to turn around two days later to go back out to sea and die. And if this is not disappointing enough we have an annoyingly distracting second story line taking place with Karen Allen as, oh yeah who cares! It is easy to see why fishermen are classified as having the most dangerous jobs, but hey it pays pretty well, that is if you actually catch some fish. Why bother casting people with any acting ability if they are not going to get to act, or even work with a decent script. If the writers were going to completely fabricate the entire event, why not at least make it have a different ending. Or here's another approach, the real story was exciting on its own, why not tell that story. Then there was all that mushy love brought into the story, why not give it a love conquers all ending? Well time for my rating. The only butt I got to see in the movie was of some dirty fisherman, so eewwhhhhh. I did enjoy the action scenes, so for that I give The Perfect Storm a six out of 10.
