The Review:

Generally speaking I enjoy movies made by the Farrelly brothers. Dumb & Dumber was funny, but There’s Something About Mary is a classic. In Me, Myself & Irene, the bros take on Jim Carrey again, a veteran of funny movies, and add Renée Zellweger to the mix. Which I thought was a rather curious choice since I don’t think of her as a funny actress like I do Cameron Diaz. I always think of her from Jerry Maguire and Nurse Betty, in which she has some funny parts, but the movies aren’t complete comedies. Well enough of my ramblings, and more about the movie.

Me, Myself & Irene is set in the little itty bitty state of Rhode Island where Carrey (Man on the Moon) is a state trooper named Charlie. We learn that he used to be the star of the force until his wife left him for a midget, who is the real father of his three boys. Ever since then Charlie has had problems dealing with conflict, he just grins and bears it. So everyone in town walks all over him until one day he snaps and a second personality by the name of Hank appears. This causes problems at work since Hank also doesn’t deal with conflict well (he goes out of his way to cause conflict and then uses extreme measures in getting rid of the conflict). About this time a young lady from Upstate New York is heading through the state trying to get out of a relationship with her boss. This Irene woman (Zellweger, Nurse Betty) is stopped by the police because she is wanted for a hit and run back home. In reality it is a set up by the Feds to get her as a witness to testify against her old boss, but she doesn’t know anything about the illegal activities by her ex-boss. Anyway, Irene has to be sent back to New York, and the department selects Charlie to do it. Once she is returned, her ex-boss tries to have her killed, which then sets off a long adventure with Charlie/Hank and Irene try to escape from her old boss and crooked cops.

Peter Farrelly wrote this film along with Mike Cerrone, and he also directed the movie with his brother Bobby. Other cast members are Mongo Brownlee, Jerod Mixon, Chris Cooper (American Beauty), Anthony Anderson, Michael Bowman, Robert Forster, Tony Cox, and a whole lot more.

Frankly, I was a bit disappointed with Me, Myself & Irene. I was not nearly as funny as I would have expected judging by the track record of the Farrelly brothers and Jim Carrey. It just didn’t have enough laughs. It was a strange film with many strange characters and strange twists, but these were not always funny things. And since this is a comedy, you gotta have the laughs, so I can only give the film five couches out of ten. Bye bye.
