What would you do it you didn't have to look at yourself in the mirror? You can bet my character and morals would not disappear with my physical appearance, like that of Kevin Bacon's character Doctor Sebastian Caine, in Hollow Man. I sure do wish I could have disappeared instead of watching that piece of crap though. This Sci-Fi Thriller was more like a 'B' rated slasher movie without the comic relief. Definitely not what I expected from director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) this could have been so much more. I didn't see the original Invisible Man, but I can guess it wasn't this reprehensible. Not even the performances from Bacon (Stir of Echoes) or even Elisabeth Shue (Palmetto) as his colleague and former girlfriend are up to par. Bacon and his team of researchers are working on a project for the military. They report to William Devane (Payback), as Doctor/Colonel Howard Kramer. When the film opens, they have already discovered how to make animals disappear, what they are working on it to make them reappear. Bacon develops his theory and viola they gorilla Isabel, as traumatic as it was, reappears and her mood mellows. She was a little irritable before. The research team, or rather Bacon holds back this discovery from the military you know, the people funding his research. Then in all his arrogance, ' he has to be first,' has this theory tested on himself, without the benefit of any testing or research. Well as you can guess, without the benefit of proper testing or experimentation, something goes wrong with his reappearance and he is forced to stay invisible, that is until they can find a solution. While invisible Bacon goes on a free- for- all and violates or molests a co-worker, spies on another in a bathroom and rapes an attractive neighbor. Then in a jealous rampage kills a small dog. Oh did I forget to mention, his former flame, Shue has moved on to another researcher and Bacon is not pleased. When Bacon is about to be exposed to Devane, he goes on a murderous spree, starting with the Colonel and working his way through his research team. The acting was pitiful, the plot ridiculous and the violence not worth my time or money. So I get to see Bacon's booty. Yes, I admit I was looking forward to seeing that and maybe a little more, but after his performance I certainly did not enjoy looking at anything to do with him. The story line was blatantly disrespectful to women, the horrible abuse suffered by the animals and complete disregard for anything human, just made me irritable. I could have easily overlooked the animal abuse, as part of the plot, but was unwilling to after what I was subjected to in the name of a movie. During Bacon's transformation he cried, "he didn't know it would hurt so much." Well at least he knew what was happening to him, none of the animals had that luxury or choice. My rating for this movie is a one out of 10 couch's. This movie is not even video material.
