Going into the movie, Gone in 60 Seconds, directed by Dominic Sena, it would be easy to think, what a stupid idea for a movie. Leave it to Nicolas Cage starring as Randall Memphis Raines to make something as heinous as grand theft auto, come across as exciting, graceful and even romantic. Even as a felon Cage (8MM) is portrayed as a stand up good guy. Cage as Memphis has been retired from the business for six years but is forced back for one more boost of 50 cars in one night, all in order to save his kid brother, Kip Raines played by Giovanni Ribisi (also in Boiler Room). Fifty cars in one night, sounds like a lot of cars, and it is, but these are not your ordinary Honda's or Toyota's, these are high end, luxury and antique cars. Can he do it? Well you will just have to watch the movie to see he even Cage can pull off something this grand Cage has a flawless performance and Angelina Jolie (Girl, Interrupted) as Sara 'Sway' Wayland the former girlfriend and partner in crime of Memphis has a small supporting role. It is a good thing it is a small role because seeing Jolie play herself is getting old and nauseating. Ribisi is not only, not believable but you just want to smack him hard to get him to show some sign of life in his character. A typical non-emotional performance for Ribisi again. This film is full of car stealing lingo, a lesson on boosting and a moral dilemma. Others in the movie are Delroy Lindo (The Cider House Rules), T.J. Cross, William Lee Scott, Scott Caan (Enemy of the State), Grace Zabriskie, and Robert Duvall (A Civil Action). What is missing is any kind of nudity from Cage or anyone else in his gang. With this oversight, I give Gone in 60 Seconds, eight couches out of 10.
