First of all if Wes Craven's Dracula 2000 was directed by Patrick Lussier and written by Joel Soisson and Lussier where does Wes Craven come into the picture? He is not the star, he did not direct and he didn't write it, what was his involvement? Oh I get it, he lent his name to the picture so they could draw an audience. We the unsuspecting audience paid good money to be scared like Nightmare on Elm Street did to us only to get Dracula 2000. Not many dead people, very little blood, no gore, and the violence was only alluded to. In fact if I didn't know any better this could have almost been a Disney film. Wes Craven's Dracula 2000 begins with a London antique collector, Christopher Plummer (from The Insider) as Abraham Van Helsing discussing his most recent items with his apprentice Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting) as Simon. Then cut to a break in to his vault and followed by Plummer discovering what was stolen, a casket with Dracula. Next we are on a plane heading to New Orleans with the casket and the thieves. On another flight is Plummer and Miller is following Plummer. Well Dracula is after Mary in New Orleans which, how convenient, is where the thieves were heading off to and Plummer is after Dracula and Mary is his daughter oh and Simon is following along. The only interesting part of this entire movie was the unique version of Dracula's origin. In this film he dates back centuries farther than we have all believed in past movies. This version also explains the fear of Christian objects and why silver can destroy him. This entertains us all of five minutes then we realize that the writers did not give full thought to their little theory and I can blow more holes into it than a riffle full of buckshot would do. I was not scared, I was not thrilled, I was not shown blood, real violence or any good special effects. This movie is not even worth video. My rating for Wes Craven's Dracula 2000 is a two and that is only because I was slightly amused by the silver theory. Maybe if I was given a gratuitous butt shot of Simon I would have enjoyed this film more, ooops I dropped the soap. Last updated: Thursday, March 20, 2008 02:49:50 AM |
