Mmmm. Tastes like chicken. I know I’m not the first person to point out that many foods taste like chicken, but I say what the hell. But I digress, or in the case of chickens, digest. OK, I admit that was lame, but after so many movies you begin to crack. As to Chicken Run, the film is an animated story about chickens on a farm in merry old England that continually try to escape. The group is led by Ginger (voice by Julia Sawalha), who comes up with the escape plans and Mac (Lynn Ferguson) works out the details. Then they often use a pair of rats (Phil Daniels and Timothy Spall) to gather the supplies. Meanwhile their nemeses in battle are the farmer and his wife, the Tweedies (Tony Haygarth and Miranda Richardson, from Sleepy Hollow). All of their escape attempts end in failure and land Ginger in “the hole.” These attempts also mimic those attempted in The Great Escape. Then one day a rooster comes flying into the coup, and Ginger hatches (sorry) a new plan to fly out of captivity. The rooster is Rocky Rhodes the Rhode Island Red (Mel Gibson from Payback) who is in a circus, but wants out. So Rocky agrees to try and teach the chickens how to fly, but knows it is useless since he can only fly with the help of a cannon (this info he withholds from the others). Of course this all fails, and the chickens are still stuck with things getting more desperate as the farm prepares for a makeover. This is because Mrs. Tweedy wants to switch from egg production to making chicken potpies. So now you have a crisis, and Rocky and Ginger are falling for each other. What’s a chicken to do? A lot of the film is humorous and entertaining. However, as is to be expected in an animated feature, most of the jokes are G rated. Because of this, I can only give Chicken Run eight couches out of ten. Smell ya later.
