If you saw The Blair Witch Project and had never seen or heard any of the background on that film, then you might have found that movie very frightening. But if you were like me and knew that it was just a film project and the students were really okay, then The Blair Witch Project wasn't that scary. So if you like movies scarier than the first and without all the shaking camera shots, then you might like Blair Witch 2. Basically the sequel attempts to make fun of all the hype surrounding the first film, and still be a horror film. I think that Joe Berlinger does an okay job with both of these aspects. Berlinger directs the film and wrote it with the assistance of Dick Beebe. Also this film had a much bigger budget than the first. The film starts with scenes of Jeffrey Patterson (Jeffrey Donovan, Sleepers), a local to Burketsville, Maryland resident, being treated at the county mental health facility (not too pleasant to look at). Then we skip ahead to his little tour guide of the woods where Blair Witch was made. On the tour are a young couple working on a college project, Tristen (Tristine Skyler) and Stephen (Stephen Barker Turner). Also along is a real Wicca practitioner Erica Geerson (Erica Leerhsen) , and a Goth by the name of Kim Diamond (Kim Director, He Got Game). So the five of them head off into the haunted woods. Nothing freaky happens first, but then they run into another tour group, at which point things start to happen. The other group heads off to the famous Coffin Rock, while the five stay at the foundation. In the morning no one can remember what happen for several hours the night before, and what happened to their video equipment and research papers. So the five head off to Jeff's place, an old Civil War era factory, to view the tapes and try and reconstruct what happened during the missing hours. Meanwhile the tour group that they had encountered turns up dead at Coffin Rock in a ritualistic manner. At this point is where Blair Witch 2 gets scary and freaky. I enjoyed some aspects of the movie, like mocking the hype that followed the first film (which in a way pokes fun at this film), and where the filmmakers would cut back to a scene, but the second time around it is different (see Fight Club). Plus I was actually a bit startled by some of the film, which is what horror movies are supposed to do. However I did think that the story could have been better than what it was (not all of it seemed to fit), plus I always like more nudity from the actresses. To end this review I must give a rating, so I shall and it is a seven, out of the ten possible on the About-Movies.com couch scale. Goodbye. Last updated: Thursday, March 20, 2008 02:50:04 AM |
