The lowdown on Bedazzled: Not good, not horrible, and Elizabeth Hurley (Edtv) is hot in leather (not sure why she stuck with Hugh Grant after that hooker scandal). This Harold Ramis (Analyze This) directed remake of a Peter Cook written film just didn't work that well. The original film by the same title was in 1967 (same year of the Israeli-Arab Six Day War, amazing how history works) and starred Dudley Moore and Raquel Welch. Frankly I feel they should have tried remaking some other film. The synopsis is this: Elliot (Brendan Fraser, Blast from the Past) is a dorky loser working as a technical support person in San Francisco. As a loser he has no friends but lusts after an attractive co-worker by the name of Allison (Frances O'Connor, About Adam), who he has no chance of getting. So along comes Satan (Hurley) looking to exchange Elliot's soul for seven wishes. Obviously he is going to use those wishes to gain the affections of Allison (actually the first is used up getting a burger). The Devil being the devil, she just doesn't try too hard to make all the wishes come out rosy, so Elliot wastes wish after wish, never getting it perfect. Fraser puts in his usual performance, nothing spectacular, but does what he can with the script. Hurley could have done more (the only thing she did great was look good, but alas no nudity). The film had a few chuckles here and there, but you never thought that there was a chance in Hell (over used cliché for this film) Elliot would get Allison, nor were you really rooting for him. The scene I liked the most was Hurley as the teacher in her schoolgirl outfit. The rest of the small cast includes Rudolf Martin, Gabriel Casseus, and Orlando Jones. In the end I give Bedazzled a rating of three couches on our scale of ten. See ya when Hell freezes over. Last updated: Thursday, March 20, 2008 02:49:54 AM |
