The Review:

Very, very strange are the first words that come to mind in this dark comedy. The movie is set in the 80s in New York City where a young executive apparently has some serious problems. You see Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) likes to kill people and even animals. But a detective by the name of Donald Kimball (Willem Dafoe, Affliction) is on to him after the disappearance of another executive in the company by the name of Paul Allen (Jared Leto, Girl, Interrupted) who is not the Microsoft co-founder. Bateman killed Allen and assumed his identity in the social circles.

So then Bateman continues to kill people, from a homeless guy to hookers. While this is going on he is also trying to dump his girlfriend Evelyn (Reese Witherspoon of Election) who just can't let go.

As I stated earlier in this review, American Psycho is a strange picture. There is one scene that is all about business cards. In another scene Bateman tries to make a deposit with a cat in an ATM. Plus the whole grittiness of the picture stands out.

The film is directed by Mary Harron, who also wrote the screenplay, while the novel was written by Bret Ellis. The rest of the cast includes Josh Lucas, Samantha Mathis, Chloe Sevigny from The Last Days of Disco (Jean), and Monika Meier as Daisy.

Unfortunately this rated R film did not have any nudity (there was some lesbian stuff though), which would have been nice with Reese Witherspoon in the movie. Then there is the big question of whether he is psycho and killing the people, or he is psycho and just thinks he kills them. And though it is complex film with many levels and twists in the plot, I just didn't care that much for American Psycho. So I give it three couches out of ten for the rating.
