The Review:

Not the worse film I've ever seen, but not too many notches (or couches as it may be) above it. This doesn't bode well for a movie if you plan on continuing to read this review. The premise for the picture is that a few people in a small New England town (I think it is the same one used in Practical Magic) receive a love letter. The letter is the same, and most don't know whom it is from. So a bunch of speculation goes around as to who sent it. But really the film focuses on the middle-aged Helen (Kate Capshaw) as the local bookstore owner who first gets the letter. Eventually she starts sleeping with a college student named Johnny (Tom Everett Scott), whom she thinks wrote the letter, and vice versa. Of course each doesn't know this, and what's more is that George the fireman (Tom Selleck) wants (and has wanted for sometime) Helen for his own. Throw in Ellen DeGeneres (Dr. Dolittle) as Janet Hall, some lesbianism by Helen's mother (oddly not involving Ellen), and a complete lack of good nudity made for a pretty tame little comedy. The Love Letter was written by Ms. Maria Maggenti and directed by Peter Chan. The rest of the cast includes Blythe Danner as Lillian, Geraldine McEwan as Miss Scattergoods, Gloria Stuart (Old Rose in Titanic), Beill Buell (Officer Dan), Erik Jensen, Jessica Capshaw, and Julianne Nicholson. I wasn't impressed with any of the acting, nor the story. The scenery was nice, but that doesn't matter much if you're not interested in the rest of the film. So for the About-Movies.com rating it shall receive a perfect two couches.
