Take a whole bunch of second string actors and actresses, add a good story, and what do you get? At First Sight, MGM's latest film this winter that stars Val Kilmer as a blind massage therapist, who falls in love with Mira Sorvino, a New York architect with a need to make Kilmer's character Virgil see again. Hello, I am Robin McFetridge with the Out & About review of At First Sight. The film, which is based on a true story, begins when Amy Benic, played by Sorvino, falls in love with Virgil after a weekend get-away in upstate New York. So now Benic becomes obsessed with helping Virgil regain his sight after almost an entire lifetime of blindness. But Virgil's sister, portrayed by Kelly McGillis, is set against changing things because she doesn't want to see her brother hurt. Despite this Virgil goes through with the medical procedure and re-gains his sight. With his new sight though his world changes, as does Amy's. I won't give away the ending but the story reminded me of the book Flowers for Algernon. The movie is directed by Irwin Winkler, but I don't know if he is related to Henry Winkler, AKA the Fonz. Also in the film are Steven Webber from Wings, Nathan Lane from The Birdcage, and Bruce Davison as the doctor who arranged the surgery for Virgil. Though the movie is based on a true story, parts of it seem a bit unbelievable. Also the story should be a powerful one, but it just doesn't come off that way. I must say I was disappointed at the end. For one thing I wanted to knock that damn smile off of Val Kilmer's face, and another thing is that I wanted to see the movie Charly, which won Cliff Robertson an Oscar. Well enough about other movies, time to wrap At First Sight up so we can move on. The acting left something to be desired, like sending Kilmer back to action movies so he can be a pretty boy. In the end I give it a lowly three couches for the Out & About rating. This is Robin McFetridge saying hasta la menyada, and see you again next time. Later.
