Hi, I'm Mike and this is the Out & About review of Stepmom, a Tri-Star Pictures film about two kids, their dad, played by Ed Harris (Apollo 13), and their two moms. So we'll get right to it. The two kids real mom is portrayed by Susan Sarandon, and the step mom is played by pretty woman Julia Roberts (My Best Friend's Wedding). The film is directed by Chris Columbus and set in New York where Ed Harris has brought his girlfriend, a photographer for an ad agency, to live with him. The thing is, is that he also has his two kids living with him at different times, you know that old joint custody thing. So we have the age old battle between step mom and step kids, sort of like Cinderella, but the step mom isn't wicked. In fact the little girl, played by Jena Malone, is more wicked than anyone else, and Sarandon's character can be a real bitch at times. So while everyone is complaining about everyone else, we discover that Saradon's character has cancer. So now her character is trying to battle cancer and Julia Roberts. OK I left a lot of details out, but that's why you're supposed to go to the movie. I also must add that the little boy is very good and adds lots of laughs. Liam Aiken plays the little boy. This drama tries to show the audience that families don't have to fight over their children's love, but can all love the children and receive love back even if they are not your own flesh and blood. Stepmom has great acting by great actors and actresses, a good script, a powerful story, and a touching end. On a side note, no pun intended, is that John Williams, the music man wrote the score for the film. Now time for the list: No nudity, some well-placed laughs, great drama that will bring tears to the eyes of most women, and fairly mild language. Stepmom will probably get some Academy Award Nominations for either the film or the actors. But as for the Out & About Awards, it will receive no nominations. That's because there are no Out & About Awards. Enough about the show, time for the rating. I give Stepmom a solid eight couches on the Out & About scale of ten. I'm Mike Stevens for the Out & About Movie Review saying keep reaching for the kegs. Ya, whatever. Now back to your host. Last updated: Thursday, March 20, 2008 02:45:24 AM |
