Trekies of the world unite! Or don't, I don't really care since I'm not one of them. I am a Star Trek fan, but I don't spend my free time trying to learn Klingon. Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of the Out & About Movie Review starring me, Michael Stevens as your kemosoby to the movies. As you may have already guessed, this time we will study the ninth installment of the ever-popular Star Trek movies entitled Insurrection, not to be confused with erection, two totally different subjects. On a side note, the last film, First Contact, was much better than the first 'TNG' film, Generations. As to the movie Patrick Stewart is back as Captain Jean-Luc Picard with Jonathan Frakes directing and acting as Commander Riker. All the rest of the crew is back as well including Data, Worf, Dr. Crusher, Geordi, and of course the lovely counselor Troi. And finally Rick Berman produces this Paramount Pictures production that is very different than the last one, First Contact. In Insurrection comedy seems to be the pervasive element, along with, as always, some social commentary. The story starts out with Data going crazy on some far off planet located within the Briar Patch. Data is the only Enterprise crew member on this mission, the rest are off doing their own thing when they get news of Data's problems, and of course they speed off to help their friend. It turns out that Data had discovered some plot to rid the inhabitants of the planet of their planet. This is because some grotesque race wants to harvest a special energy that the planet generates that keeps the inhabitants very young looking even though they are hundreds of years old. And what's more is that Starfleet is helping out because they need all the allies it can get in their war against the dreaded Dominion. So now the Picard and gang become rebels. The movie is really good, in fact I think it's the best ever for Trek movie. The special effects were great like they always are, but what sets this one apart from the previous nine is all the humor. It seemed more like a comedy than a science fiction film. Plus at the end you still feel good about the outcome and how we always persevere over the bad guys and good conquers evil, which when I say it like that make's it sound a bit corny. Corny or not that's what we expect, and that is almost always what gets delivered. Unlike some Trek films in the past Insurrection isn't dominated by the special effects, which for a change I liked. It was a bit fast paced, but I didn't really care with great lines like, "definitely feeling aggressive tendencies sir," as uttered by Michael Dorn as Worf. Also Brent Spiner is great as the android Data. To finally wrap things up I'll put the Out & About stamp of approval on with nine couches out of the ten possible for Star Trek: Insurrection. I have been your movie dude, Mike Stevens. So live long and prosper. Beam me up Scotty.
