Welcome to another Out & About Movie Review, today's review is of the suspense drama Hush starring Gywneth Paltrow (Sliding Doors) and Jessica Lange. This PG-13 film was written an directed by Johnathan Darby. Howdy folks, I am your movie dude Mike Stevens for Out & About on KBVR TV. In Hush, Lange plays the overbearing mother-in-law of Paltrow, who is married to Johnathan Schaech's character. Actually the two don't start off married, but get hitched through the manipulation of Lange's character Martha Baring. Lange's character ultimately wants a grandchild to continue the family name and would just prefer Paltrow out of the picture after that. You see the horse ranch Martha Baring lives on belongs to her son, and it is struggling to make it, so Martha gets her son Jackson to return to the country and run the farm. Basically Martha wants Jackson home to stay to keep the ranch, raise a grandchild, and eliminate Helen, Paltrow's character. But Jackson's grandmother Alice, portrayed by Nina Foch, knows all about Martha and her motives, and thus warns Helen of impending doom. Will Helen heed Alice's advice and get out while she still has a pulse, or will Martha get her boy back? Suspenseful? No, not really. The only real bright spot in the picture was Nina Foch's performance as Jackson's grandma. Of course Gywneth is always a pleasant person to watch on film even if she isn't so nice off camera. As always I must comment on nudity, to which Hush has none. Bottom line the film was not that suspenseful, but was fairly predictable. And not having much suspense is kind of a problem for a suspense thriller film. Now the film was OK at times, but in the end I was glad I saw it on video. Time for the rating of Hush, which gets three couches on the Out & About Movie Review scale of ten. For the Out & About Movie Review I have been your movie dude Mike Stevens.
