The Review:

Hello peoples and welcome to the Out & About Movie Review of Elizabeth starring Cate Blanchett (Oscar and Lucinda), as who else but Queen Elizabeth, that being the first one. This rated R movie directed by Shekhar Kapur starts off towards the end of Queen Mary's reign of England, Mary being Elizabeth's half sister from which we get the Bloody Mary. I'm not sure what goes into a Bloody Mary but I do know that orange juice and Vodka make a screwdriver, but at the same time I haven't a clue as to whom it is named after. But enough of this tangent, on with the movie review. Like I said it begins when Mary is still queen and lasts into the early years of Elizabeth's rule, which is something I found disappointing since items such as the battle with the Spanish Armada and the exploration of the Americas are two things that are not covered in this historical drama. It seems odd that a movie titled Elizabeth only covers a small time frame of one of England's most tenured rulers. For comparison think of a movie about FDR only covering the first couple years of the depression and leaving out all of World War II. Well I've gotten off on another tangent so once again back to the movie that also stars Joseph, not Ray, Fiennes and Geoffrey Rush (Shine). Fiennes (Stealing Beauty) plays Elizabeth's love interest Robert Dudley, and Rush is her secret police type body guard Sir Walsingham. All of the acting was good and the setting looked great. Not much in the way of special effects and only brief nudity. As to the plot, well Mary doesn't have an heir, but doesn't want Elizabeth to become queen because Mary is Catholic and Elizabeth is Protestant. Many of Mary's confidants want her to have Elizabeth killed before Mary dies from what appears to be cancer. In the end Mary can't bear to have her sister murdered and so Elizabeth becomes queen. Now all the advisors, who are men, want the new Queen to get hitched and pregnant ASAP so an heir will be born. So enter stage right some prince from France, who does not care what kind of tail he gets as long as he gets it, who tries to get Elizabeth to marry him. All of her advisors also want this so that a war with France can be avoided. So as all this unfolds there is much question as to whom Elizabeth will marry, if anyone, and will there be a war as well as much intrigue about people's loyalties. Oh ya and The Pope wants her dead too. That's all I'll give you. So to end this thing I'll send you off with the Out & About Rating. I give it six couches, with the main knock being the short time frame, as stated before. So for the Out & About review of Elizabeth, I am Michael Stevens.
