Ya like breasts. Me too. I think that's why I rented Dangerous Beauty. Hello again, I'm Mike Stevens for the Out & About review of Dangerous Beauty starring a large cast of virtual unknowns. This Warner Brothers flick, directed by Marshall Herskovitz, is set in 16th century Venice, which at that time was a independent state, Italy didn't unify until the 1860s. This film, rated "R" because of the nudity, is a story of love and prostitution. The story focuses on the character of Veronica Franco, played by Catherine McCormack, who is the daughter of a former courtesan who falls in love with a noble person named Marco. A courtesan is a nice way of saying whore for the upper class. Anyway Veronica decides to become a courtesan herself after finding out that she can earn a bunch of money and read all the books she wants, and she hopes that it drives the boy she is in love with into her arms. See, she can't marry Marco because she is poor and Marco must marry a rich girl from the right side of the tracks. Along the way she makes quite a few enemies to go with her money. She also makes a few allies like defense minister Ramberti, portrayed by Simon Dutton, not to be confused with Simon Birch. And I might add Catherine McCormack is one fine looking woman. But now back to the movie and out of my personal gutter. It may surprise some that this film is actually based on real events, especially when it comes to the bishop of Venice. As to the movie as a whole. It has a few surprises, some action, colorful words of the time, a few laughs, and great cinematography. There is some action, but not much. Personally I wasn't that drawn in to the plot and felt bored at times, but the ending was a nice surprise. The acting was good, but I would have preferred a few more people that I had heard of instead of Rufus Sewell, who plays Veronica's love interest Marco, and Jacqueline Bisset as Veronica's mother. The story-line, the setting, and costumes were all decent, and of course there was plenty of nudity, my personal favorite. But time now for the Out & About rating. As always the rating is out of ten couches and does not necessarily reflect the views of KBVR TV management or its sponsors. So for the Out & About rating of Dangerous Beauty, I give it six couches. Of course out of habit I must say that it is way better than Out of Sight, my pick as the worst film of 1998. For the Out & About movie review I have been Mike Stevens, now back to the show.
