The Review:

Howdy again and welcome, welcome, welcome to my house, the house of Mike. This is the Out & About Movie Review, and today we'll look at the suspense horror flick, Apt Pupil. This TriStar release doesn't have a real star in it's cast, but is adapted from a writing star's work of the same title, that star being Mr. Stephen King. You ask who's in it? Well Brad Renfro portrays the character of Todd Bowden, a high school student who is looking for more information on the Nazis and the Holocaust. And he finds this info in the form of a former Nazi played by Ian McKellan. McKellan's character is wanted by the Israelis for various Holocaust crimes, which Renfro's character is well aware of this fact and uses this to black mail the ex-Nazi into telling Renfro all about the concentration camps. But along the way Renfro, previously a straight A, all-American kid, starts to struggle in school. Enter David Schwimmer as the guidance counselor who wants to help. But in the end Renfro gets more help than he wants. Apt Pupil is a rated R film, and is not for the squeamish, as with most movies made from Stephen King material. The movie is interesting, but the subject matter is very serious, which may turn many viewers away. The acting is good, but the entire story seems a bit farfetched. Bryan Singer, the director of The Usual Suspects, directs and co-produces the film that also stars Kevin Pollack. So time for the bottom line on Apt Pupil, good acting, interesting premise, powerful subject matter, but a bit graphic and even somewhat disturbing for most. So for the rating I give it five couches. For the Out & About Movie Review I have been Michael Stevens saying till we meet again, good friend.
