Review:

First of all throw out all those preconceived notions you may have had about this film based on the trailers. This movie was quite a bit different than what I expected based on the ad campaign. Of course David Spade is still the lead actor, and frankly I think he should go back to being a supporting actor. I feel he is much better in supporting roles (like his role in PCU) than he has been as the leading man. That said, on with the review of The Adventures of Joe Dirt.

The movie begins with Joe (Spade) in LA working as a janitor at a talk radio station where his white trash essence is discovered by the producer for the Zander Kelly show. Zander (Dennis Miller) latches on to this upbeat loser’s story of woe and milks it for all it’s worth. Between pot shots by Zander we learn the life story of Joe Dirt. He was abandoned at the age of eight by his parents at the Grand Canyon. Since that time Joe has been in a search for his parents who he thinks lost him, not dumped him. Along the way he ends up in Silvertown in the Northwest where everything was wonderful. There he meets Brandy (Brittany Daniel), a hottie that actually cares for Joe. But he eventually moves on so that he might find his parents. Along the way he finds more and more misfortune, and makes some friends like Kicking Wing (Adam Beach) and Clem (Christopher Walken).

All the while, Joe Dirt fever spreads across LA as people find the story funny, but touching. Soon it even brings Joe’s parents out of the woodworks. But how will Joe react to finally finding his parents? Will he ever realize that Brandy loves him, and will he ever lose that awful hairstyle (a mullet)?

Joe Dirt was written by Spade and Fred Wolf, and Dennie Gordon directed. Also in the cast are Kid Rock as the bully Robby, and Jamie Pressly as Jill Dirt, the girl that Joe loses his virginity to (though they are not actually related).

I can’t say that this is a great picture, but it is far superior to Tom Greene’s Freddy Got Fingered. The film had plenty of laughs and even some character development, but the acting was average and the story itself wasn’t that good. To conclude, I give Joe Dirt five couches out of ten for the About-Movies.com rating. Later.
