All I can say is that Mike Myers is great in this film about the Disco Era. Myers, better know from his Saturday Night Live days and Austin Powers, plays a serious role in this Miramax picture. Hello and welcome to the Out & About Movie Review of 54. I'm Mike and I'll guide you through all this. First the setting is the late 70s, when drugs, casual sex, and disco dancing were in and blue collar was out. In comes Steve Rubell, portrayed by Mike Myers, who opens the glamorous Club 54 in New York, the Sistine Chapel of night clubs. The place is packed with celebrities, cocaine, and sex acts plus the occasional hired help. This is where the main character of Shane comes in. Shane is played by Ryan Phillippe, who is also in Cruel Intentions and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Shane is from the other side of the river, Jersey, where you have to be lucky to escape, which is what he wants to do. He also wants to hook up with fellow Garden Stater Julie Black, played by Neve Campbell. Campbell plays a soap opera star looking to move to Hollywood and make it big. Back to Shane, who decides to go to Club 54 one night and try to get in, which he does, but only after removing his shirt. Soon Shane is working at the club and become a bit of a celebrity himself, but there is trouble brewing at the cocaine infested club that refuses to pay much to the old IRS. 54 is based on the true story about the real life club. Others starring in the film are Salma Hayek as Anita, Sela Ward, Sherry Stringfield, Heather Matarazzo, and Ellen Albertini Dow as Disco Dottie (the granny). 54 is rated R for all the drug use, a bit of violence, limited nudity, sex, and language. As to the nudity, it was just O.K., nothing to really get excited about. As to the film, which is written and directed by Mark Christopher, it had great acting by Myers, and an interesting story. Problem is I had already scene the VH1 special on the club and the movie The Last Days of Disco, so by the time I got around to watching this, my Saturday night fever had broken, my disco inferno had burned out, and I had overdosed from all the cocaine use in the films. So despite a great performance from Myers, 54 only gets four couches for the Out & About Rating. I have been Mike Stevens your movie dude, and to borrow a phrase, catch ya on the flipside.
