Boy does Vin Diesel know how to make a bad guy the most loveable character on the screen. He does it again as Dominic Torretto in, The Fast and the Furious. Diesel has an aptitude for these unredeemable characters that you have to love. He surprised us in Pitch Black and he is even more charming as Dom, the leader of some back street drag race drivers that may have a hand in something more illegal than drag racing. Critic’s worry that the allure of these hot cars and adrenaline pumping speed is going to start a craze for racing in the streets. Well guess what they already do and watching this film is not going to make anyone go out and start racing in the streets. First these guys have supped up their cars at an expense that none of the kids can actually pay to play. What average joe can add $10 to $20 thousand to a car just to make go faster than the posted odometer speed. Yeah this was just a movie or you would really have to go out an boost DVD’s and VCR’s from trucks to pay for your NOS, that’s nitrous oxide to those of us that don’t frequent the parts and accessory stores for racing gear.

Now down to the plot of this fast and furious flick, and it actually did have a plot. We start off the film with three Honda civics hijacking a semi truck full of DVD’s from Panasonic, talk about subtle advertising. Then we are in some cheesy hole in the wall sandwich shop and Paul Walker as Brian Spindler is ordering the tuna salad (apparently it is not supposed to be good) what he is after is the counter girl Mia (Jordana Brewster) who happens to be Dom’s sister. The rest of his posse enters and one of them, Vince (Matt Schulze) likes Mia too. As Brian is leaving, Vince picks a fight and Mia has Dom stop it. He then tells him he just lost his job. Brain works for Harry (Vyto Ruginis) the local car part accessory supplier. Turns out Harry likes Brian and keeps him but warns him that they are his biggest customer because when Dom races everyone wants to buy what he has. Later Brian shows up to race and offers his car title because he doesn’t have the cash. He said if he wins he gets the cash and the respect. Well at the end of the race the cops show up and everyone takes off. Dom ends up getting popped but Brian shows up and whisks him off and keeps him out of handcuffs and makes a new friend. Now that we have completely forgot about the truck hijacking in the beginning of the film and we think we in for lots of racing and cool cars we find out this film is about an undercover cop infiltrating the back street racing scene not to bust the racing but to catch the truck hijackers. Seems those Honda civics have really cool racing accessories and the tire skid marks they left belong to a brand of racing tires so add two and two and they have their would be thief.

This film is full of explosions, gunfire and a couple of car races. This film is probably not the racing experience you were expecting but still an enjoyable film. I was left a little disappointed that as soon as the cars topped out in speed all they did was hit a button for a burst of speed. Takes away the adrenaline rush for me rather quickly. This film was directed by Rob Cohen and also starred Michelle Rodriguez, Rick Yune Chad Lindberg and Johnny Strong. I would have loved to see Diesel’s ass but that didn’t happen. In fact I don’t believe there was any nudity. But give me a good bad guy like Diesel and who needs a booty shot? I give The Fast and the Furious a seven on the About-Movies rating scale. Mostly because who uses the word narc for snitching these days?

Bu bye.
